  2. evaluate the software. On registering and paying the amount set out
  3. below, Goodhand Technologies will supply you with the SHUTPAS.EXE
  4. program which enables you to change the password for the program,
  5. and the latest version of SHUTOUT.EXE and documentation.

  20. New viruses are being introduced nearly every week, anti-virus software is usually several
  21. months behind - after the virus has already been discovered.
  22.  
  23. If you run a network with personal computers as workstations, the risk of virus infection is
  24. even greater.
  25.  
  26. To try and stop infection users can be instructed to scan for viruses, virus protection can be
  27. loaded onto the workstations to try and "catch" suspicious programs, or with some computers,
  28. the floppy disk drive can be removed.
  29.  
  30. There is an easier way!

  32. Simply load SHUTOUT before you network programs - or when the workstation starts,
  33. ensuring that the computer is unable to load programs from the A: drive.
  34.  
  35. SHUTOUT protects your computers and networks by disabling the access to the floppy
  36. drives, while allowing access through password protection.
  37.  
  38. Enabled on start up, SHUTOUT is a small (6K) terminate and stay resident DOS program that
  39. intercepts any calls to the floppy drives. SHUTOUT can be loaded into high memory. On the
  40. first attempt to access the floppy drive, SHUTOUT accepts a password. If correct, normal
  41. access applies, if incorrect, access is denied. The computer will treat the floppy drives as non-
  42. existent, producing the error message "DRIVE NOT READY Abort, Retry, Fail".

  44. SHUTOUT gives you control of your network. Unlicensed software can not be loaded onto
  45. the network or hard disks without the password.

  110.         Copy the programs from the SHUTOUT disk into a subdirectory on your hard disk
  111.         (local or network) called SHUTOUT.
  112.  
  113. Running
  114.  
  115.         To run SHUTOUT, make sure you are in the SHUTOUT directory, and type
  116.         SHUTOUT. As a security measure, shutout does not display a message when loaded.
  117.         However, if you have DOS 5.0 you can use the command "MEM /C |MORE" from
  118.         the DOS prompt. This command will display the programs loaded into memory.
  119.         SHUTOUT.EXE will be displayed in the memory map if it has loaded successfully.

  121.         Shutout should be loaded from either your AUTOEXEC.BAT file or from your
  122.         network startup batch file. Using a line editor such as EDLIN or DOS 5.0's EDIT,
  123.         your AUTOEXEC.BAT should look something like this;

  131. Tips
  132.  
  133.         SHUTOUT should one of the first programs loaded in your autoexec.bat or network
  134.         batch file.
  135.  
  136.         Windows may "freeze" you computer (PCSA Network) if SHUTOUT is loaded after
  137.         the network programs and not activated previously by trying to access the floppy
  138.         drive.
  139.  
  140.         NOTE:       On a PCSA network, the USE ?: or USE /D command will invoke
  141.                     SHUTOUT (first access only) and the install message will be
  142.                     displayed.

  153. Procedure
  154.  
  155.         SHUTOUT, when run, is a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program, staying in
  156.         memory while other programs are run. SHUTOUT monitors any system calls to the
  157.         floppy drives. The first time access is attempted, it displays the message "SHUTOUT
  158.         INSTALL, HIT SPACE KEY". At this prompt, either hit the space key (and you will
  159.         be unable to access your floppy drive, or type in the password.
  160.  
  161.         If the password is correct, you will now be able to access the floppy drive(s) as
  162.         normal. If the password is incorrect, or the space key is pressed, access to the floppy
  163.         drive(s) is denied.
  164.  
  165.         SHUTOUT only allows one password attempt. If you enter the wrong password, you
  166.         will need to re-boot your computer and re-enter the password.

  168. Password
  169.  
  170.         The password is a four characters long and can be changed by running the program
  171.         SHUTPAS. SHUTPAS must be run in the same directory that SHUTOUT.EXE is in,
  172.         and SHUTOUT.EXE must not be write protected.
  173.  
  174.         Type in "SHUTPAS" and follow the prompt, entering in a new password.
  175.  
  176.         It is recommended that the program SHUTPAS be kept in a separate area by the
  177.         Network Administrator to ensure no unauthorised use of the program.

  179. Problems
  180.  
  181.         SHUTOUT has been tested and run with a large number of popular (and not so
  182.         popular) software packages. If you experience difficulties (screen or keyboard
  183.         freezing) firstly, remove shutout and try again. If the problem disappears, try loading
  184.         SHUTOUT is a different order. If you still experience problems, please notify
  185.         Goodhand Technologies.
